Champion 302 Carbon Steel Hand Taps — Taper, Plug & Bottoming Styles

The Champion 302 series carbon steel hand taps are designed for general-purpose threading in steel, aluminum, brass and cast metals. Available in Taper, Plug and Bottoming chamfer types, these taps deliver accurate, clean threads for production, maintenance, repair and metal fabrication work. Precision-ground flutes ensure smooth cutting and chip evacuation while the carbon-steel body provides durability for both hand and machine use.

Key Advantages

  • Three chamfer types (Taper / Plug / Bottom) for all threading situations.
  • High-quality carbon steel construction for general-purpose threading.
  • Precision-ground cutting edges for clean, true, burr-free thread formation.
  • Available in a complete range of UNC, UNF and Metric thread sizes.
  • Ideal for tapping through-holes, blind holes and starting threads.
  • Use with T-handle or machine tapping (low speed recommended).

Chamfer Types Explained

Taper (7–10 threads chamfered)
Best for starting a thread. Long lead-in makes alignment easier and reduces the risk of cross-threading. Ideal for through-holes and beginners.

Plug (3–5 threads chamfered)
The most common “general purpose” chamfer. Balances ease of starting with the ability to cut deeper into the hole. For through-holes & blind holes.

Bottoming (1–2 threads chamfered)
Designed for threading to the bottom of a blind hole. Used after starting the thread with a taper or plug tap.
